Frequent Flyer

First, let me start with a mandate - "Get miles for every single flight you take". Would you offer to pay the airline an extra $100 after purchasing your roundtrip ticket from NY to California? No? I wouldn't either. But if you take that flight without providing signing up for and using your frequent flyer account you are doing just that! (I will explain the math a little later)

Basically, some smart marketing person thought up the frequent flyer programs as the airlines affinity program to reward travelers, and to keep you flying with them. Make no mistake, this was a very shrewd move. The airlines are not giving much away, and in return the get some highly devoted business travelers that will bend over backwards to travel with their preferred airline.

If you are a frequent business traveller then you already know the game... but I will explain in brief for the general population:

    First, let's say you only travel by air once or twice a year like most Americans. LA to Las Vegas for some good quality family entertainment for example. You may not think that your trips are even worth recording, because they are short, and because you don't travel very often. But don't you dare take a flight without getting miles.

    True, your flight miles may not add up to much, but considering that most FF miles never expire, and considering that eventually you will be able to get something in return for them it would be foolish not to hold onto them.

    Now let's say that your flight covers 500 miles each way. Assuming you are purchasing your ticket in coach class, you will receive 1000 miles on most airlines for that trip. Under most airline programs it will take you about 25 such trips (to accumulate 25000 points) to earn one free domestic (continental 48) trip in coach class. So if you do that trip only once a year, it will take you 25 years to earn a free ticket. Not much to look forward to, I agree.

    However, after only 5 such trips (using 5000 points) many airlines will allow you to upgrade from coach to first class. Now you are sitting up front with the rest of us snobs. You get to get on first and get off first, and you don't have a stranger's arm hanging over your armrest the whole trip.

    But believe me, if you earn only 1000 points a year the airlines aren't going to treat you any better than those drink carts that they bang around the aisles.

Now the real beauty of the FF programs comes for the "frequent" travelers (hence the name). On all major airlines there are tiers to the frequent flyer program. On Delta it's called "Medallion" (as are many of the pork meals served in first class). On United it's called "Premier". Whatever the name, the point is the same - perks, perks, perks!

The perks include: use of first class lines at checkin, early boarding (to get that luggage space), access to airline lounges, and bonuses on the mileage that you earn.

Flying a certain amount of mileage during one calendar year will gain you entry into this elite club of ultra-frequent flyers. Most airlines will allow you into the lowest elite level with around 30,000 paid miles per year (note that flying for free doesn't count). With around 50k to 60k you can get into the mid-level program, and with around 100k per year you will be the cream of the crop. Believe me, while I was "Platinum Medallion" on Delta they treated me like a king. My change fees were waived, I got all sorts of coupons, I was able to upgrade even the cheapest coach class ticket months in advance. It was great... but alas, travelling jobs don't last forever, and I am now sitting in back with the rest of you.

As another example, let's assume that I was still Platinum Medallion and I was purchasing a ticket from NY to SFO for sometime a few months down the road. I would shop around, watch for cheap coach class tickets, and I would buy one online from some place that offered me points or miles or cash back (often the airlines own website will give extra points). Usually If I shop around I could find such a ticket for around $300 roundtrip. I buy the ticket, online, and then before it is even mailed to me I call the special number given to me as an elite member (bypassing the wait on the phone) and I ask for my upgrade. As a Platinum Medallion, I had unlimited upgrades and I could do them any time in advance of the flight. Considering that the flight date months away it is likely that I will get the upgrade. So now I have myself a first class, coast to coast, round trip for $300.

Then the time comes to take the flight. When I go to the airport I don't wait for anyone! I go right into the first class line (which is usually slower than the coach line unfortunately) and check my bags (they don't care if they are overweight or if I have a few extra things to bring). The attendant politely smiles when she sees my platinum card, and she puts priority luggage tickets on my bags so that after they are shaken around and broken they will be the first to come out on the conveyor belt on the other side.

I head to the gate, but not to wait in the dirty chairs with gum stuck to them by the door, but in the posh airline lounge above the gates. I can watch TV, drink a few drinks (free booze), and use the facilities in private while waiting for the plane.

When boarding the plane, of course I get to board first because I am in first class... however, even if I had been unable to upgrade to first class I would still board before the average citizen because of my FF status.

Now, here is where the fun begins. On board I am sitting in first class on a ticket that is probably cheaper than many late comers paid for their coach tickets. Furthermore, because of my FF status I earn more miles for that same trip that those around me. Assuming a 3000 mile coast to coast trip, I will earn 6000 "base" miles for the round trip, plus 6000 bonus miles for my FF status. That totals 12000 miles for one $300 ticket with free first class, which roughly translates into 1/2 of a domestic coach FF ticket (assuming 25000 miles required). I would personally say that the 12000 FF points is worth around $240 (again, I will explain the math below). So net/net I have paid $60 for a first class coast to coast ticket. Cash outflow was $300, but I earned roughly $240 back in my frequent flyer account which I can use later.

If I had been travelling for business on an international flight it gets even better. Watch this:

Assume JFK to Tokyo = 8000 miles.
My company pays for business class.
For flying a round trip I will earn 16000 base miles (actual miles flown),
plus a 50% bonus of 8000 miles for the "paid business class ticket",
plus a 100% bonus of 16000 for my FF status. That's 40,000 miles just for taking one flight that my company paid for.

And this says nothing of the fact that I am also building up my mileage for next year's Medallion status.

One of the most important things to realize is sticking with the same airline. The trick to getting to these elite levels is to fly the same airline each and every time. If you travel 100,000 miles every year, but split it between two airlines, you will only earn the lowest level of elite status which will only give you a 25% bonus on your miles travelled. At the end of the year you'll end up with 125,000 miles in your account. If fly the exact same ammount on only one airline then you will end up with 200,000 points. Don't stray from your primary airline. Ever.

The math
Okay, as promised, here is my finanical philosophy of FF point value: 1 point is worth 2 cents.
I come up with this not based on some airline insider information, but just on judging what I would use the points for. You can always find deals on the airlines to travel places. Salt Lake to Atlanta for $179 roundtrip, Anywhere to Vegas for like $99, etc... It really doesn't make sense to use your hard earned travel on such a cheap flight, unless you have no other choice. For me, I would not use FF miles to fly a domestic trip unless the trip was going to cost me $500 or more. Hence a $500 ticket costing 25,000 points means that a point is worth 2 cents. If you want to be conservative, use 1 cent, but either way... those points are still worth something.

 

Miles vs Segments

Another caveat to be aware of is the segments clause.
Whereas before I have stated that it takes a certain number of miles to earn elite status in a frequent flyer program, you can also earn the same status by flying many (shorter) flights. In fact, that is how I earned Platinum Medallion on Delta. The Delta chart is something like this:

When I was living in NY and working in Detroit for a year I would come home almost every weekend. I flew Delta which offerred only connecting service through Cinncinnati. I was young and not in much of a hurry, so I didn't mind the connection. This meant that for each round trip, although I would only earn a small amount of actual flight miles, I would earn 4 segments (LGA-CVG-DTW-CVG-LGA). It only took 25 times of doing this to get 100 segments. So even if you are only travelling a short distance, the segments can really add up and help you. Again, the point is don't stray from your primary airline.

 

Partnerships

If you are travelling, but are absolutely unable to get a flight on your preferred primary airline (the one you have built up the most base miles with that year) then check to see if the airline has any partners. Star Alliance (which includes United domestically and many other airlines internationally) is what you would hope for from a partnership. With little exception, all benefits and segments, and points and bonuses are fully transferrable from one airline to another. For example, if you wanted to fly United, but had to fly Air Canada instead don't worry about it. Just give Air Canada your United number and you will earn everything as you would had it been a United flight. But beware, not all partnerships are what they appear to be. For example, Delta and United will allow you to accrue miles on eachother, but you don't get the segments and it doesn't count toward your base mileage on either airline. In my opinion this scenario is just not worth it. Better to earn the miles on the airline that you are flying in that case, unless you are absolutely positively sure that you will never fly them again.

 

International

International flights are no fun in coach, but with the tips from this site you should be making your way to business class soon. The thing to be aware of is that international segments count for more than domestic segments. Where above I said that you needed 100 segments to earn Platinum Medallion on Delta you can actually do the same with 20 international segmenets. In otherwords, internation segments are 5 times better than domestic. Or, another way of looking at it, you are 5 times dummer if you miss getting miles on a international segment compared to a domestic segment. "Get miles for every single flight you take"

If you do end up making it into business class on an international flight you are in for a treat. International Business Class is a far better place than Domestic First Class. The seats are bigger, they recline farther, they have footrests and builtin TVs with many movies to choose from. The only thing even remotely bad about international business class is that it is not quite as good as international first class. For International First, imagine a suite at the Ritz Carlton, on an airplane. On United, International First seats sit individually (nobody next to you!) and have more room than a small New York apartment. Delta removed all of their international First seats and now only have "BusinessElite" (read: business). But unless you are a CEO or independantly wealthy, most of us can just hope for company paid business class tickets, with the occassional dream of upgrading to first.

 

Deals

Children usually fly at 50% to 75% of an adult fare. Sometimes there are deep discount fares that are not reduced for children, but some discount is usually available. If your child is under two years old and you don't mind holding them on your lap then you don't need to buy them a ticket. If you have two adults, and one 1 year old travelling with you, and you get creative with your seat selection then you could pick the two outer seats of a three seat block for the two adults, hoping that the middle seat will not be taken (they are the last to fill up) and you may get lucky and get a seat for your child for free.

Expedia

We recommend Expedia for all online purchases. Although all the major airlines offer online purchasing, and some even offer 1000 bonus miles for purchasing there, it is nicer to keep everything in one place. Fares are the same no matter where you go (Travelocity, Expedia, Yahoo, etc...) - but sometimes there are slightly cheaper fares on the airlines own page - not for the majority of flights, just for the flights that their computer projects will not be full over the next few days.

Profiles

One of the greatest thing about expedia is what it remembers. You can store everything, from FF numbers, rental car info, passport info, drivers license numbers, and your preferred credit cards (we recommend the United Mileage card) all right there. And the best part is, you don't need to go to one special screen to enter the information. The first time you book a ticket there it will remember it for you. When you go back, you will be pleasantly surprised to see that it remembers you want your aisle seat with the low salt meal and it remembers your FF numbers better than you do. For my family, with 4+ people usually travelling, this really comes in handy.

Seats

Expedia has the greatest seat picker feature we have found. After making your reservations it will pull up a seat map of the airplane and let even the most inexperienced computer user pick seats easily. Whats more, you can go back time and time again and change the seats all in Expedia.

Review of TMA Corporate Suites 

 

Rental Houses / Apartments versus Hotels

If you have never expored the possibily of renting an apartment, villa, or even a full house for your vacation / travel needs then I highly recommend you read this. Clearly for short term stays (< 3 days), a hotel is the way to go. But for longer term trips, nothing beats the convenience of having your own place to call home with multiple bedrooms, multiple bathrooms, a kitchen, parking, etc... You can find short term rentals just about anywhere you would like to go.

Consider this, on a recent vacation to Honolulu my family and I looked at the "Hilton Hawaiian Village". It is considered the "Ritz Carlton" of the Waikiki, and it has great rooms, great restaurants, great beaches, and tons of other activities. However, when you stay there, you are only getting a room. One room. During the busy season that one room can cost upwards of $300+ per night. My wife and I are very close with are kids, but the idea of spending a week in one room with my wife and I in one queen bed, with our 2 and 6 year old three feet away from us in a second queen bed at the outrageous cost of $300 per night seems a little steep!

In comes the idea of a rental unit. In Hawaii alone, there are thousands upon thousands of rental units available for anywhere from $50 per day (for a small studio/cottage) to multi-million dollar mansions for much more. Our family settled somewhere in the middle on a $350 per night 4 Bedroom 3 Bath house in the prestigous Hawaii Kai neighborhood with it's own private pool, hot tub, and 2 car garage. So insted of 2 adults and 2 kids stuffed in one small room with 2 beds, my wife and I had a great master suite, and the kids each had their own room, and we invited my mother-in-law to stay in the 4th bedroom. It was great. Plus, having a kitchen is essential with the kids there, and it was great to have two TVs so kids and adults can relax watching different things. The private pool and hot tub where great, and we were only a few minutes drive from the best beaches (Waikiki and Haunama Bay) when we wanted to get sandy. All in all, it was a fantastic experience. But accept this word of caution. Whenever possible, get references of past tenants, or use a rental service that allows past renters to post feedback on the unit that you are considering. On another trip to Salt Lake City, UT, we rented a furnished apartment for a month and a half from TMA Corporate Suites. At first site, we were somewhat pleased with the apartment. It's location was fantastic, right in the Sugarhouse area of Salt Lake City, and close to everything we needed. But that is where this rental's qualities ended. After parking (in the lot that was being rebuilt leaving dust all over our car every day), we learned that our unit was in the basement, and we had the longest walk from our parking space to our unit. Barely any light got into the unit, and it always had a cool damp feel to it, because it was under street level. Our first night sleep was disrupted by the fact that the matress had some sort of red stain (to their credit, the people at TMA Suites did replace the mattress within a few days) and we were woken up by the showering neighbors. I have to say, that I have lived in apartments before, and this building seemed extra noisy in terms of transmitting water related noise all around. Enough to wake us up at 5AM daily.

Had we seen and read reviews of this location, and of TMA Corporate Suites in general, we probably wouldn't have rented from them.

Unfortunately, our problems didn't stop there. We had put up a $300 fully refundable deposit with them, which seemed fair for a furnished apartment. Before leaving we cleaned the apartment meticulously. It was cleaner when we left than when we got there, and we even made sure to run and empty the dishwasher because we knew if it took them more than 2hrs to clean the unit they were going to deduct from our deposit. Shortly after moving out (incidentally, we moved out 1 day early but they wouldn't refund any rental fees) I began to inquire when they would refund my $300. It was then that they first told me that it would take 4 to six weeks for all of the utility bills to come in to make sure they could refund my deposit. I guess they wanted to make sure I wasn't siphoning gas from the fake fireplace and stockpiling it for my own use, because I can't imagine any other way we really could have run up much of a bill on the utilities. In any case, I spent the next 10 weeks sending them reminders/questions/followups about my refund, and got nothing but the standard reply of "it's on it's way". Finally, almost three months after leaving the unit, we received our refund. However, the company had taken it upon themselves to deduct $40 from the deposit for carpet cleaning expenses claiming that there was a pet smell in the unit and pet hair all over. Imagine my surprise, cause we don't have a pet.

In any case, it is long since past the deadline for me to challenge the charge on my credit card, and I am out of state, so it would be difficult for me to take TMA Corporate Suites to small claims court, so the only recourse I have is to file a compalint with the Better Business Bureau of Utah (which I have done) and to warn other would-be renters to make sure to clarify the terms of their deposits, and to clearly document the condition of the unit before they leave. This is good practice in any situation, but especially if you fail to take my advice.
